Industrial Robot Insurance and Liability — A Guide for Corporate Buyers

UNITREE Turkey Hub & Competence Center
Before deploying a robot dog or humanoid on site, procurement teams almost always ask the same question: can this be insured, and what happens if it damages something or someone? As the Turkey distributor we hear this constantly. Below is which existing insurance lines come into play and what to ask your broker.

Is There a Robot-Specific Insurance Line?

Turkey has no separate, mandatory insurance line dedicated to autonomous robots. In practice robots are covered under the engineering and liability lines already established in the market. You do not need to invent a new product; you need the right line with the right scope.

The headings below are the covers actually discussed for a robot dog or humanoid deployed on site. Which ones you need depends on your use case — a Go2 patrolling a car park and a B2 working on a production line do not share a risk profile.

1. Machinery Breakdown — The Robot Itself

Machinery breakdown insurance is the engineering line that protects production and industrial machinery against unexpected failure, breakage and technical damage. Repair or replacement costs from sudden and unforeseen damage are met by the policy.

The critical point for a robot: cover typically extends to material loss arising from the negligence, fault or carelessness of company personnel or third parties. A robot dropped, struck or damaged through operator error falls under this line.

Ask your broker: does the robot being mobile and autonomous affect cover, and does it continue off-site (transit, rough terrain, outdoors)?

2. Third-Party Liability — Damage the Robot Causes

This line meets compensation claims arising from bodily and material damage that individuals, legal entities or their employees may cause to third parties. An autonomous robot striking a visitor, scratching a vehicle or damaging equipment is assessed here.

The general conditions for this line are published by the Insurance Association of Türkiye and form the basis of your policy.

Ask your broker: how is fault assessed when an autonomous system causes the damage, and is the limit adequate for how busy the robot's working area is?

3. Employer Liability — Harm to Your Own Staff

If the robot shares space with your employees on a line or in a warehouse, harm to a worker falls under employer liability rather than third-party cover. Your occupational health and safety risk assessment must also be updated to include the robot.

Practical tip: document the robot's working area, speed and stopping procedure. That document serves both your OHS file and the claims assessment.

4. Transit and Electronic Equipment Cover

The journey to your site is a separate risk; transit insurance covers that stage. On supply through Robotlar.org we manage delivery, but if you arrange your own logistics you should discuss this cover separately.

For components such as LiDAR, cameras and the compute unit, electronic equipment insurance can be considered as additional cover — especially where sensor cost is high relative to the robot's price.

Checklist for Your Broker

  • Can the robot be added to our existing machinery breakdown policy, or is a separate policy required?
  • Are autonomously moving devices excluded?
  • Are outdoor, rough-terrain and stair use cases within scope?
  • Is the third-party limit adequate for how crowded the robot's working area is?
  • Does fault assessment differ between remote-controlled and autonomous mode?
  • Are faults arising after a software update covered?
  • Does battery fire risk require separate cover?

What Robotlar.org Does and Does Not Provide

What we provide: official distributor warranty on Unitree and Pudu products, installation, Turkish technical documentation and field support across Turkey. This scope covers manufacturing and assembly-related faults.

What we do not provide: Robotlar.org is not an insurance agency or broker; we do not issue policies or act as an intermediary. The information above is general guidance compiled for corporate buyers and is not a substitute for legal or insurance advice. Always confirm your cover with your own broker and the current general conditions of the relevant line.
