Why is NVIDIA advocating for open AI models?
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang used his first X post to share the "why open models matter" letter NVIDIA signed. The essence: AI will transform every industry, power every company, and be built by every country. Open models, in turn, strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty.
This is one of the most influential figures in technology pointing to an open foundation everyone can build on, rather than a closed, monopolistic AI. And the most tangible application of that foundation is robots.
How do open AI models connect to 'Physical AI'?
The next wave of AI is stepping off the screen into the physical world — this is called Physical AI. A language model generates text; physical AI teaches a robot to walk, see, grasp and decide. NVIDIA powers this layer with platforms like Jetson (edge compute), Isaac and GR00T.
Here's why open models are critical: a robot's biggest hurdle is 'generalization' — adapting to unfamiliar environments (we covered this in detail in our China humanoid robot revolution analysis). Open, buildable models let organizations train robots on their own data and scenarios. You need a developable platform, not a black box.
Which robots embody this vision in practice?
Unitree's developer-focused EDU platforms carry exactly this open, buildable philosophy.
