The series has three configurations: R1 AIR (20 DoF, 4 joints per arm, monocular camera) is the budget entry; the standard R1 (26 DoF: 6 per leg, 5 per arm, 2 waist, 2 head; binocular camera) is the balanced core; R1 EDU is the only variant open to secondary development — expanding up to 40 DoF with an optional NVIDIA Jetson Orin (40-100 TOPS) compute module and optional dexterous hands. - The rule is simple: if you will write code, EDU is mandatory — AIR and standard R1 do not support secondary development.
Joint and Hardware Architecture
The R1's joints use low-inertia high-speed internal-rotor PMSM motors with crossed roller bearings; dual joint encoders provide precise position feedback. Cabling is routed internally (hollow joints) with local air cooling. Ranges of motion are wide: knee -10° to +139°, hip yaw ±157°, waist yaw ±150° (R1/EDU). Arm-joint carrying capacity is about 2 kg per the manufacturer — the R1 is a dynamic motion and interaction platform, not a manipulation workhorse.
R1 or G1?
The R1 is the accessible start in humanoid robotics; the G1 is the mature research standard. The G1 side offers higher joint torque, LiDAR/depth perception options, ~2 h battery and the huge open-source ecosystem fed by hundreds of labs worldwide. The R1 side offers a clear price advantage, a lighter body and the multimodal voice+vision model. For robotics clubs, demos and algorithm learning we recommend R1/R1 EDU; for publication-grade research, teleoperation and data pipelines, the G1 EDU.

Engineering Evaluation
The R1 is a coherent engineering package aimed at breaking the entry barrier of humanoid robotics on the price and portability axes. PMSM joints and wide ranges of motion deliver above-class dynamic movement; however, the ~1 h battery and ≈2 kg per-arm limit position the platform for lab, education and demo scenarios rather than long field missions.
