OVERVIEW

Unitree R1

The Unitree R1, announced in July 2025, is the development platform that sharply lowered the entry barrier to humanoid robotics. At 1230 × 357 × 190 mm (about 123 cm tall) and ~29 kg, it is a humanoid one person can carry and set up; its global launch tag of 39,999 yuan (about $5,900) made world headlines as the most accessible full-form humanoid development platform. In Turkey the R1 starts at $10,635 and the R1 EDU at $19,011 with authorized distributor pricing; contact us for custom configurations and pricing.

The series has three configurations: R1 AIR (20 DoF, 4 joints per arm, monocular camera) is the budget entry; the standard R1 (26 DoF: 6 per leg, 5 per arm, 2 waist, 2 head; binocular camera) is the balanced core; R1 EDU is the only variant open to secondary development — expanding up to 40 DoF with an optional NVIDIA Jetson Orin (40-100 TOPS) compute module and optional dexterous hands. All variants share a 4-mic array, speaker, WiFi 6 + Bluetooth 5.2, OTA updates and an integrated multimodal large model for voice and vision; the box includes a smart quick-release battery, charger and controller.

Positioning is clear: the R1 is the sibling of the flagship G1. Launch demos — cartwheels, downhill running and self-recovery from the ground — proved it is a fully dynamic humanoid despite the price. R1/R1 EDU is ideal for algorithm development, robotics clubs and the maker community; labs needing joint-level deep research, longer battery life and the mature SDK ecosystem should choose the G1 EDU. The ~1 hour battery runtime is managed via spare packs thanks to the quick-release design.

One-Person Setup, Fully Dynamic Humanoid

At 123 cm and ~29 kg, the R1 is a platform one person can carry and run within minutes; it works out of the box without calibration. Launch demos — cartwheels, downhill running and getting up from the ground — showed fully dynamic motion is possible in this class.

Open Interfaces and EDU Expansion

Joint and sensor interfaces are open; secondary development is supported on the R1 EDU variant. With an optional NVIDIA Jetson Orin (40-100 TOPS) compute module and optional dexterous hands, the EDU expands up to 40 DoF — a path from algorithm research to manipulation experiments.

ENGINEERING ANALYSIS

Unitree R1 Technical Analysis

Choosing a Variant: AIR, R1 or EDU?

  • R1 AIR: 20 DoF, 4 joints per arm, monocular camera; no waist or head joints. The budget gateway for demos, education and basic locomotion/interaction.
  • R1 (Standard): 26 DoF — 6 per leg, 5 per arm, 2 waist, 2 head; binocular camera. The balanced core of the series for ready-made applications and demos.
  • R1 EDU: The ONLY variant open to secondary development. Optional Jetson Orin (40-100 TOPS), optional dexterous hands, expansion up to 40 DoF; also the longest manufacturer warranty (12 months; R1 8, AIR 6).
  • The rule is simple: if you will write code, EDU is mandatory — AIR and standard R1 do not support secondary development.

Joint and Hardware Architecture

The R1's joints use low-inertia high-speed internal-rotor PMSM motors with crossed roller bearings; dual joint encoders provide precise position feedback. Cabling is routed internally (hollow joints) with local air cooling. Ranges of motion are wide: knee -10° to +139°, hip yaw ±157°, waist yaw ±150° (R1/EDU). Arm-joint carrying capacity is about 2 kg per the manufacturer — the R1 is a dynamic motion and interaction platform, not a manipulation workhorse.

R1 or G1?

The R1 is the accessible start in humanoid robotics; the G1 is the mature research standard. The G1 side offers higher joint torque, LiDAR/depth perception options, ~2 h battery and the huge open-source ecosystem fed by hundreds of labs worldwide. The R1 side offers a clear price advantage, a lighter body and the multimodal voice+vision model. For robotics clubs, demos and algorithm learning we recommend R1/R1 EDU; for publication-grade research, teleoperation and data pipelines, the G1 EDU.

ENGINEERING EVALUATION

Engineering Evaluation

The R1 is a coherent engineering package aimed at breaking the entry barrier of humanoid robotics on the price and portability axes. PMSM joints and wide ranges of motion deliver above-class dynamic movement; however, the ~1 h battery and ≈2 kg per-arm limit position the platform for lab, education and demo scenarios rather than long field missions. Secondary development being EDU-only is the most critical pre-purchase decision point.

R1 Frequently Asked Questions

The most commonly asked questions and answers about R1.

The R1 is designed as an entry-level humanoid development platform for universities, robotics clubs, R&D centers and startups. At 123 cm and ~29 kg it can be set up by one person; with its multimodal voice+vision model, binocular camera and OTA updates it works out of the box.

The Unitree R1 Turkey price starts at $10,635, and the development-ready R1 EDU at $19,011 (Robotlar.org authorized distributor pricing, July 2026). The landed Turkey price — customs, VAT, shipping and installation included — is finalized in a quote; contact us for custom configurations and pricing. Every sale is covered by a 1-year official distributor warranty.

R1 AIR (20 DoF, monocular camera, 4 joints per arm) is the budget entry; the standard R1 (26 DoF, binocular camera, waist+head joints) is the balanced core; R1 EDU is the only variant open to secondary development — expanding to 40 DoF with an optional Jetson Orin (40-100 TOPS) and optional dexterous hands. If you will run your own code, EDU is mandatory.

The R1 is the accessible start; the G1 is the mature research standard. The G1 offers higher joint torque, LiDAR/depth options, ~2 h battery and a huge open-source ecosystem. The R1 stands out with its clear price advantage and lighter body. We recommend R1/R1 EDU for robotics clubs and algorithm learning; G1 EDU for publication-grade research and data collection.

The R1 ships with an integrated multimodal large model processing voice and vision together: the 4-mic array and camera inputs merge in one model, so the robot understands spoken commands in context. An 8-core processor is standard; on the R1 EDU, local AI capacity can be expanded with an optional NVIDIA Jetson Orin module at 40-100 TOPS. OTA updates are available on all variants.

Manufacturer-stated battery runtime is about 1 hour; the smart battery is quick-release — continuous operation is planned with spare packs. This profile positions the R1 for lab, education, demo and event scenarios rather than long field missions.

Yes. The R1, R1 AIR and R1 EDU are supplied through Robotlar.org, Unitree's authorized distributor in Turkey: import, customs and VAT are handled by us, with installation and training delivered on-site. Fill out the quote form for the exact price per configuration.

The R1 EDU lets you run your own control software via open joint and sensor interfaces, deploy to simulation platforms, and run local AI workloads with the optional Jetson Orin module. The AIR and standard R1 do not support secondary development — the manufacturer explicitly points to the EDU edition for customization needs.
