Robotic Hand or Gripper? Terms First

Most people searching for a "robotic hand" actually need a professional two-jaw gripper: tougher, faster, far more economical, and sufficient for most industrial tasks. Dex1-1 is exactly that class. Dex1-1 Technical Specifications

Per official manufacturer data, the Dex1-1 measures 143 × 78 × 67 mm and weighs 550 g; 90 mm stroke (120 mm fully open), 80 mm jaw length, 5-120 N adjustable grip force, 50-375 mm/s adjustable speed and 0.24 s full-stroke closing. Fingertip position resolution is 0.1 mm. Load ratings split by mode: up to 20 kg in form-fit (hooked) grasping and up to 5 kg in friction-based vertical grasping. The manufacturer notes these are laboratory measurements dependent on voltage and control settings — field performance varies by application.

Communication and Control: A Researcher's View

What makes the Dex1-1 interesting for research is its control architecture: high-speed RS-485 at 6 Mbps with a 1000 Hz control rate, a 15-bit absolute encoder, a command set of angle/angular velocity/torque/stiffness/damping, and feedback of angle, velocity, torque and temperature. That is the precision needed for force-controlled grasping and learning-based manipulation. The 24-64 V supply range (24/48 VDC recommended) eases powering from a robot body or external source; -20…60 °C suits field use.

Standard or Camera Edition?

Dex1-1 comes in two editions: Standard, and Advanced with an in-jaw camera (1080P, 30/60 FPS, FOV H:118° V:87° D:140°). The camera edition targets hand-eye coordination and vision-to-action (VLA) data collection — recording what the gripper sees directly improves imitation-learning datasets. For purely repetitive industrial tasks, Standard is enough.

Which Robots Is It Compatible With?

Dex1-1 can be used standalone (bench/custom integration) or directly with the Unitree humanoid family: G1, H2 and R1. For OEM teams integrating onto their own platform, the RS-485 interface and wide supply range keep integration simple.
